Healthy Vegan Crispy Orange Tofu

Updated: Oct 19, 2020

This orange tofu is vegan, gluten-free, and full of flavor! It’s an easy vegan dinner recipe made with crispy fried tofu and a sweet, tangy, sticky orange sauce. It’s reminiscent of the delicious Chinese dish we all know and love!

There are a few words you can combine together that sound pretty amazing. I think crispy and orange are great examples. But, here’s the question. Is this a case where two’s company and three’s a crowd? Because some of you might be thinking the last word in vegan orange tofu stir fry, spoils the fun.

This recipe comes together in minutes, and it’s much cheaper than buying from a restaurant. You’ll be shocked at how much it resembles store-bought orange dishes in taste, texture and quality, but it’s also super healthy and low in fat. The next time you’re craving some vegan Chinese food, try your hand at making it yourself and save some money!

You know that bland and spongy tofu block most of us shy away from? This orange tofu is like the wild, cooler, party version of that. It’s flavorful, crispy, and oh so tasty. First, we’ll fry the tofu to create crispy golden cubes. Then, we’ll coat the fried tofu in a sweet, sour, and tangy homemade orange sauce. I’m confident this dish can turn any tofu-hater into a tofu-lover!

On its own, tofu doesn’t have much character, but that only means it’s a palette ripe for seasoning! This recipe uses the sweet and savory flavors of soy sauce and orange marmalade to make a deliciously sticky dish that pairs perfectly with rice.

Serve it over white rice, garnish with green onions and sesame seeds and we swear you’ll have every meat eater fooled and coming back for seconds!

Ingredients:

Crispy tofu:

  1. 1 (14 oz) container firm tofu

  2. 1 tbs. sesame oil, or your favorite oil

Orange sauce:

  1. 1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice

  2. 1/4 granulated sugar

  3. 2 tbs. soy sauce

  4. 1/2 tsp. ginger paste

  5. 2 tsp. cornstarch

Directions:

  1. Cut tofu into bite sized pieces, drain and pressed dry, and saute in sesame oil until browned.

  2. Meanwhile, add water, orange juice, soy sauce, ginger paste, granulated sugar to a medium-sized saucepan. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium.

  3. In a small cup or dish, mix together cornstarch and water until thoroughly blended. Pour cornstarch mixture into sauce, stirring constantly.

  4. Cook, stirring, over medium heat until sauce thickens to your liking. Remove from heat and combine with tofu until completely coated.

  5. Serve over rice. Enjoy!
